Rugby Union: Twickenham glory for College students
Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 11th May 2010

Bishop Burton College rugby scholars Laurence Pearce and Ben Dorrington were part of the Yorkshire Under 20s squad that successfully defeated their Gloucestershire counterparts by 15-13 at a rainswept Twickenham on Saturday.

Yorkshire's coach Anthony Posa commented: "It was a good, tense, game full of several surprises, but we toughed it out and we're delighted to come away with the title. Gloucestershire have a great tradition but so have we in this tournament and we lived up to that. It was a great defensive effort by the lads and the forwards were superb and while we had a tense few moments before the end we held our nerve."

Laurence Pearce in full flow vs. Dorset & Wiltshire Under 20s

Bishop Burton College Rugby Scholarship students, Ben Dorrington and Laurence Pearce, helped Yorkshire Under 20s to the final of the National Under 20 Championships at Bournemouth RFC on Sunday. The travelling side recorded an emphatic 64-0 victory over their hosts, Dorset & Wiltshire Under 20s. The final, to be played at Twickenham Stadium, will be played on Saturday 8th May against Gloucestershire Under 20s, who easily disposed of their Lancashire counterparts by 74-19.

Rugby Union: Rugby Scholars remain on course for Twickenham

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 7th April 2010

Yorkshire Under 20s qualified for the National semi-finals in emphatic style when they scored ten tries to put East Midlands to the sword 61-19 at Pontefract. Yorkshire's game was over as a contest when the White Rose side delivered an irresistible first-half display in which they combined forward power, pace and skill in the backs and an impressive measure of team cohesion that their visitors could not contain.

Yorkshire led 32-7 with five tries in the first 27 minutes, the pick being a superlative sweeping move from deep in their own half in which the pack produced a surge of perfectly-timed close support play to create the momentum and flanker Oliver Rodgers supplied the telling pass that released the backs and left fly-half Sam Watkinson with an unchallenged path to the try-line.

Two tries by wingman Tom Hodson underlined his impressive finishing skills, while a brace from full-back Joel Gill and two more from Bishop Burton No 8 Laurence Pearce extended the carnage to half-time, at which point Yorkshire were leading 44-7, centre Tom Davidson landing three conversions and a penalty.

East Midlands' first-half score by wingman Josh Bassett followed a breakdown in a Yorkshire counter-attack and a kick-and-chase, fly-half Darryl Veenendal adding the conversion.

The score was no more than East Midlands deserved for their tenacity and character when Yorkshire were at the fluent best and it was a testament to the resolve of the visitors that in the second-half they sustained their refusal to concede the struggle and matched their opponents at 12 points each in the second period.

With the game in the bag, the home side were unable to maintain their sense of direction and composure and the game deteriorated into a scrappy affair in which Yorkshire's earlier coherence evaporated totally and East Midlands grew in stature as their efforts to disrupt their opponents were increasingly successful.

Tries by prop Lewis Thiede and replacements Ben Dorrington (Bishop Burton) and Gavin Stead, with one conversion from Davidson, completed Yorkshire's scoring, while scrum-half Craig Tandy and replacement Cameron Renton crossed for East Midlands, with Veenendal adding one conversion.

Yorkshire will now play Dorset & Wiltshire in the semi-final at Bournemouth RFC on Sunday 18th April.

Bishop Burton 37 Vs Scarborough College 36

For the fourth game of the season Bishop Burton were playing at home against Scarborough College. The match was keenly contested throughout but the final score was Bishop Burton 37 Scarborough College 36.

Bishop Burton started the game off very strong defensively; they stuck to the 2-3 zone from the last game but had made a few changes as a few players were away. This choice of defensive play proved to work out very effectively as Scarborough struggled to make points in the paint and were forced to make shots from beyond the 3 point line, resulting in a lot of missed shots. From these missed shots, Bishop Burton were getting every defensive rebound and did so up until the third quarter when Scarborough started to steal a few. The first quarter wasn’t very high scoring as both teams were playing very strong defence and couldn’t convert their chances. The quarter finished 6 -7 in Scarborough's favour.

Going into the second quarter Scarborough seemed to come at Bishop with everything and were really trying to push and get the lead but the home side kept the same strong defence as they did in the first quarter. The only fault Bishop Burton may have had is some bad passing, which showed because Scarborough intercepted the ball and scored on the break which gave them a slight lead. This lead did not last for very long though because Bishop Burton were creating  chances for the likes of Lee Cessford and Sean Johnstone to take a couple of 3 pointers and convert them. These changed the score and for the first time in the game Bishop were leading and ended the 2 nd quarter leading by 2 points 18 – 16.

In the third quarter quarter both teams looked tired but Bishop Burton maintained the same strong defence they had showed all game and stopped Scarborough from scoring and then converted  chances at the other end giving them a six point lead. After this, Scarborough took a time out and regrouped, and soon cut the host’s lead down to two points. The third quarter overall was tightly contested,  with both teams playing tough defence but also converting chances. However, Bishop Burton finally looked like a team after so many weeks of playing individually.

In the final quarter Scarborough gave it their all and their point guard and shooting guard were causing a lot of problems, stealing the ball and intercepting it and making good passes. The last minute of the game was very tense as Scarborough had once again halved Bishop Burton's lead, and then scored again to make it a one point game. In the dying seconds Bishop Burton had the ball but lost it and Scarborough had one last chance to win the game with a 3 pointer but it was missed and the ball was scrambled away by playcaller Peter Walker The whistle blew and the game ended Bishop Burton 37 Scarborough College 36, the home side's second win of their debut season.

Hockey: Injuries make it difficult for Bishop Burton

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 26th March 2010

Huddersfield New College 6 vs. Bishop Burton College 2

Bishop Burton faced Huddersfield New College for the third time this season having beaten them twice already in previous encounters. However with a weakened team due to injuries it made the task of beating them for a third time much more difficult as they are a well-organised outfit.

Bishop Burton hit off the match and passed the ball around well but Huddersfield held their defence strong. Huddersfield then got the ball and put large amounts of pressure on the weakened Bishop defence and after a few minutes Huddersfield were ahead with Bishop Burton struggling to get in the game. Huddersfield continued to control the game and soon they were two up after a goal mouth scramble. However Bishop were always a threat on the counter attack, with Olivia Byas and Adam Barton offering good options going forward with strong support from Jack Hardeman and Jack White.

The visitors then got their first chance after Adam Barton won a short corner and from the short corner the ball eventually came to Jack White to slot in at the far post. However, before half-time Huddersfield managed to grab another goal after a mix up in the Bishop Burton defence allowing Huddersfield in to score.

The second half hit off with Bishop Burton determined to push Huddersfield and cause them problems. Bishop remained strong in defence and kept Huddersfield out with strong defensive work from Jake Finnigan, Helen Waites, Rosie Bulmer and Chris Bostwick. However Huddersfield again managed to get through and goalie Robert Knapton could not prevent them from scoring again.

This did not stop Bishop Burton though and they kept threatening on the counter and after a good run from Olivia Byas and support from Adam Barton, Bishop scored again with Adam Barton beating the keeper and putting John Gitau in to push into the goal.

However Bishop got extremely tired having been chasing the game for long periods of time and Huddersfield managed to get two goals towards the end of the match to finish with a deserved 6-2 win.

Basketball: Wyke are too strong for new basketball team

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 23rd March 2010

Wyke College 41 vs. Bishop Burton 27

Both teams started the match in a promising fashion, and started scoring early on. Both teams were playing well at both ends of the court, on offence and defence. Bishop Burton opted for the 2-3 zone and it proved to work effectively in the first and fourth quarter. Wyke were playing man to man defence. By the end of the first quarter the score was Bishop Burton 8 – 8 Wyke.

At the start of the second quarter Wyke began to dominate to  and Bishop Burton were unable to find a response. Wyke started the quarter at a very high tempo which caught Bishop Burton cold. Bishop Burton failed to score a single point in the second quarter and this was due to bad passing and poor communication on offence. They also tended to rush lose composure in the scoring zones.

Going into the second half the score was Wyke 20 – 8 Bishop. It took a lot of effort and determination to chip away at Wyke’s leading margin. Towards the end of the third quarter Bishop had cut the lead in half and had started to play a lot stronger in defence because of good blocks and rebounding from Phil Buckley and Nader Koder.

In the fourth quarter Bishop began to find their range and started to look like a team again but it seemed to be a bit too late as Wyke had a strong lead and didn’t look like giving it up easily. The final score was Wyke College 41 – 27 Bishop Burton.

The match overall was a disappointing one for the new College team, especially in the second quarter when they failed to score any points and throughout the whole match didn’t seem to play well as a team. Wyke, on the other hand, were well organised and structured and deserved to win.

Rugby Union: Weakened Durham are no match for Yorkshire U20s

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 16th March 2010

College Captain Laurence Pearce in action for Yorkshire U20s vs. Durham

The final pool game in the National U20 County Championships was a thoroughly one-sided affair, with the visitors, Durham U 20s, only taking to the field with 13 men. Bishop Burton College Captain Laurence Pearce started the game from number 8, and he was joined by fellow rugby scholar Ben Dorrington midway through the first half. Durham competed gamely, but the result was never in doubt and Yorkshire ran out winners by 82-7. The result means that Yorkshire topped the Northern Region pool and will now move forward to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Hockey: Unbeaten record is lost at Newton Rigg

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 15th March 2010

Newton Rigg College 10 Bishop Burton College 3

Bishop Burton faced Newton College for the first time this season with everybody wanting to get a result against the main rivals for the Northern Counties title. Bishop travelled with a weakened side due to injuries and course commitments and therefore had to draft in last minute replacements.

Newton Rigg hit off the match and passed the ball around well, controlling possession. After a few minutes Newton Rigg were ahead with Bishop Burton struggling to get into the game. Newton Rigg continued to control the game and soon the goals started flowing and before Bishop could reorganise they found themselves out of touch being 4-0 down. Bishop then had their first chance after a good pass by Jake Finnigan to put Jack White through to take on three players and force a short corner for Bishop. From the short corner clever play between Cameron Turner and Jack White provided the first goal for Bishop at the near post for Jack White.

However Newton Rigg soon took control again and took a large lead of 7-1 at half time with the much-changed Bishop team struggling to gel.

After a disappointing first half, Bishop hit off the second half with the aim of keeping the goals down and some strong defending by Helen Waites, Rosie Bulmer, Jake Finnigan and Cameron Turner kept Bishop solid at the back. After a few minutes Bishop had a spell with the ball with Cameron Turner again impressing with some good skills and then provided the ball for Jack White to score his second of the game. Bishop continued to frustrate Newton Rigg by slowing down the play and breaking down their attacks.

Newton Rigg then broke through to score again. However Bishop again pressed forward and good work on the wing by Pete Clowes and a good touch from Chris Bostwick to put the ball into Jack White to get his hat-trick.

However a tiring Bishop continued to battle towards the end with good battling in midfield by Jess Martin, Sheree Sleney and Sophie Robson but could not prevent Newton Rigg scoring two goals late on to put the final score to 10-3 but a much better second half from Bishop.

Bishop Burton will hope that they can get a full strength team for the return game in a weeks time and gain their revenge.

Ladies' Football: Penalty shoot-out drama

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 15th March 2010

On a sunny afternoon, Bishop Burton played host to the Ladies' College football tournament for the teams around the region.

The first game game was against Wyke College and Bishop Burton had a fantastic start to the tournament, with their heads up high and energy pumping. The team have worked on passing skills and movement and kept their positional shape. In this game they won 1-0, with the only goal scored by Becky.

The next game was Franklin College, who the team had played the previous week. Carisa was dominating the midfield, and made some great passes to Emma and Becky up front as they made some excellent attempts on goal. Sarah (Captain) kept the defence tight and worked well together with goalie Zoe as she made some great goal kicks. Unfortunately this match was lost 1-0, but confidence remained high.

The next game was against Wilberforce College. Bishop Burton had an advantage in this game as they enjoyed a 10 minute break before the game, so had time to rest and reorganise. This was the best match that the team played all afternoon, working well as a team, and showing great unity. Emma had some fantastic shots at the goal, but neither team scored so it then went to penalties. The shoot-out went to sudden death and unfortunately, it was Wilberforce who proceeded to the final.

The 3rd/4th place game was against Franklin College again. The teamwork was excellent and the team worked hard on their skills. This game remained goalless, so it went to penalties again, which this time the team won. Bishop Burton Ladies came 3rd overall in the tournament.

Ben, who played the full match at open-side flanker, is a first year student on the Sport, Coaching, Development & Fitness degree course. Fellow Bishop Burton students Laurence Pearce and Mark Blenkinsop, were unfortunately ruled out of the game through injury.

The Yorkshire Under 20s complete their league programme against Durham at Malton & Norton RFC on Sunday 14th March at 2.15pm. A victory will see them progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

Pentathlon: Bishop Burton College named as regional centre for Modern Pentathlon

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 5th March 2010

(l-r Nick Gandy, Director of Sport with Ann Marshall, Regional Development Officer and Peter Hart, Chief Executive, Pentathlon GB)

Bishop Burton College has been named as a Regional Training Centre for Modern Pentathlon and the two organisations – Bishop Burton College and Pentathlon GB, have announced that the College will host a Modern Pentathlon Training Camp at the beginning of August.

The Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon was first introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm in 1912 and comprises the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running.

Peter Hart, the chief executive of Pentathlon GB paid a visit to the College to discuss the plans for creating a regional training centre for modern pentathlon including a training camp this summer.

Mr Hart said: “The College is a fantastic venue for pentathlon training with world-class facilities and we are delighted to work in partnership with Bishop Burton College, the students and community of Yorkshire in focussing our activities at the College.

“We are delighted to use the support we are receiving from Sport England to help us achieve this.”

Ann Marshall the regional development officer for Yorkshire continued: “By organising regular regional training at Bishop Burton College we can bring in world-class coaches for weekend or mid-week sessions and the athletes can train together as pentathletes rather than single-discipline athletes, which will benefit them enormously.

“The training camp which is planned for the summer will give regular athletes a concentrated opportunity to train in all five sports and will also be open to athletes from other parts of the country.”

Bishop Burton College’s director of sport Nick Gandy said “We have been working together for some time already and it was clear that a partnership would be of great mutual benefit and we are looking forward to working closely with Pentathlon GB and contributing towards Modern Pentathlon’s continued success at future Olympic Games.

“By establishing these links the athletes will benefit from the College’s fantastic resources and the learners will benefit by seeing the hard work and dedication of these sportsmen and women and perhaps by trying the sport themselves.”

Football: Reaseheath have no answer to dominant Bishop Burton display

Bishop Burton College 14 Reaseheath College 0

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 4th March 2010

Bishop Burton entertained Reasheath in a Northern Counties match in a reverse of the fixture the previous month. With a few absentees, Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Chris Young, Olly Burns and Nick Robinson were called up from the HE team. Bishop Burton started brightly with the front two of Olly Burns and James Webb causing problems at every opportunity possible. It was Webb who opened the scoring after a great through ball by Tom Chippendale. Bishop Burton dominated the opening stages and the back four of Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Nathan Bell and Louis Cooper were hardly tested. Dominance started to pay with 3 more goals in the next 20 minutes with strikes from Chippendale, Burns and Webb. Bishop were playing some really good football, a lot of it one and two touches, and the mixture of FE and HE players was really paying dividends. Reaseheath launched their first meaningful attack after half an hour but a good save from Alex Gill kept the score at 4-0. Reaseheath where beginning to argue amongst themselves and Bishop Burton took full advantage of this with 2 more goals in the next five minutes. The first was from the penalty spot, after some good work from Brad Delves down the left was halted by a foul from the Reaseheath full back. James Webb took the resulting penalty to complete his hat trick. The sixth goal was scored by substitute Nick Robinson with his first touch of the ball. He finished a flowing move down the right between Nathan Bell and Jamie Williamson.

The half-time whistle went with Bishop Burton winning 6-0, a score which they truly deserved after a great attacking performance. Although 6-0 up, Manager Mark Frampton challenged his team to play using only one and two touches each and attempting to keep the ball below head height. This allowed the game to stay at a high tempo and stopped players just running with the ball. A few subs were made to freshen up the game and they all put in great performances, especially right back Shaun Robson. The scoring continued with goals from Tom Chippendale, Jamie Williamson, James Webb and two from Olly Burns which made the score 11-0. Reaseheath created their best chance of the game when a mistake from defender Luke Duerden allowed the Reasheath striker to go through one on one with Alex Gill but Gill produced a great save to keep a clean sheet. The remaining 20 minutes produced another 3 goals, the pick of the bunch being from Nathan Bell, who hit a shot on the turn from 20 yards into the bottom corner, his first goal for the college. The final whistle blew with the score at 14-0, a bit of a one-sided game but a confidence boost for the lads. All credit must go to Reaseheath though who never gave in and fought right to the end; their attitude was a credit to their College.

Basketball: New College team too strong for East Riding

Bishop Burton College 30 East Riding College 17

Posted by Bishop Burton College Sports Department 4th March 2010

For the second game of the season, Bishop Burton played East Riding College at home and came away with a deserved victory by 30-17.

The match started off slowly, with both teams unable to convert their chances. The home team were slightly nervous, which showed when it came to defending, as they were unsure as to who to mark and were slightly fortuitous that the away team did not capitalise on this. However after this nervy opening, Bishop Burton settled and scored the first basket of the match.

During the first quarter both teams missed a number of opportunities which could have easily been converted. Halfway through the second quarter though Bishop Burton got out of first gear and started scoring with more regularity, and were leading at the end of the first half by 12 – 8.

The third quarter followed the same pattern as the first, with neither team scoring many points but Bishop Burton were playing very good defence, with blocks coming from the big guys Phil Buckley and Brad Campbell.

Going into the fourth quarter, it was still a low scoring game at 17 – 12 to Bishop Burton. This final quarter was where Bishop Burton took over the game and started to dominate. They basis for this was the strong defence which restricted East Riding to 5 points for the whole quarter. On the opposite end of the court, Bishop were converting every chance that they got, with some good passing from Nader Koder and Glen Breary.

The match overall was a very low scoring game but ended with Bishop Burton beating East Riding 30 – 17. Bishop Burton were overall the better side and deserved to win the match, in what was only their second ever competitive fixture.

Rugby Union: College Rugby Scholars selected for Yorkshire Under 20s

Rugby scholarship students Laurence Pearce, Ben Dorrington and Mark Blenkinsop have all been selected to represent the Yorkshire Under 20s side in the RFU National Under 20 Championship. The representative team is currently top of the Northern Region group, remaining unbeaten after their opening 3 games. So far, they have enjoyed victories over Northumberland, Lancashire and Cheshire with remaining fixtures against Durham and Cumbria.
Director of Sport Nick Gandy was quick to praise the trio: 'Laurence, Ben and Mark have all worked exceptionally hard this season and this selection is recognition of their efforts for the College and Hull RUFC. They all have exceptionally bright futures in the game and I am hoping that the Yorkshire Under 20s can make it all the way to Twickenham to contest the National Final.'

Rugby Union: Region’s first rugby academy proving successful at Bishop Burton College

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 24th November 2009

Bishop Burton College’s rugby academy – the first of its kind in the region – has begun, allowing young sporting talent from across Yorkshire and the Humber to flourish.

The academy, which was the brainchild of College principal Jeanette Dawson and director of sport Nick Gandy, will enable talented young rugby union players to play and train at a high level, while studying for a degree.

Nick Gandy believes the academy addresses a need in the region to retain those young players with the potential to succeed.

He said: “The idea behind the academy is to give gifted young rugby players from the area the chance to grow and develop their game, while progressing academically.

“Traditionally young people with sporting talent have had to leave the area to train and study elsewhere and we feel Bishop Burton College is ideally placed to address this need and stem this flow of talent out of the East Riding.

“With the opening of the College’s new Centre for Sport & Fitness the scholars have access to some of the region’s best sporting and fitness facilities and they are able to study one of our fantastic Higher Education sports courses.

“There are already plans to offer academies in other sporting disciplines such as football and equine because we know Bishop Burton College offers the whole package for any talented young sportsman or woman who wants to achieve.”

The College worked closely with Hull Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC) to perfect the formula for the Academy and the Club will also provide coaching and sports development advice to the Academy scholars.

The club’s Director of Rugby, former Tongan international Tevita Vaikona and head coach and Hull FC captain Lee Radford work closely with all of the scholars during regular training sessions to make sure they consistently meet the high standards set by the College and the club.

Open Day: Centre for Sport & Fitness welcomes visit from Olympic gold-medallist

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 8th October 2009

The brand new Centre for Sport and Fitness at Bishop Burton College welcomed a very special guest in the shape of Olympic gold-medallist Tim Brabants.

Tim, who famously paddled to victory in the 1000-metre sprint kayak event at the Bejing games, called in at the College during its recent open day to have a look round and chat with staff.

The new centre opened on the 1st September and is open to College learners, staff and the general public.

The building features a state-of-the-art fitness suite, dance studio, sports hall, modern changing facilities and a shop.

Bishop Burton College’s Director of Sport Nick Gandy was delighted to welcome Tim to the College.

He said: “We are very proud of the new sporting facilities here at Bishop Burton College and to get a visit from a sporting hero like Tim Brabants is fantastic.

“The visit certainly caused a stir amongst the students and staff on campus and Tim was happy to pose for photographs and talk to learners as he enjoyed a tour of the College.

“He’s an extremely talented sportsman and was extremely enthusiastic about the sporting facilities here at Bishop Burton. He has promised to come and visit us again and we’re already looking forward to it.”

Tim, who is based in Nottingham, is also a practising doctor and works in accident and emergency in the city.

He was full of praise for the College’s new Centre for Sports and Fitness.

“The college is brilliant,” said Tim. “Absolutely top-class. The sporting facilities are obviously where my interests lie and the centre seems conducive to a nice environment to train.

“If I lived nearby I would definitely train here.”

Two-times Olympic gold medalist James Cracknell OBE dropped into East Yorkshire recently to help Further Education students from Bishop Burton College celebrate the end of term and the successful completion of their courses.

James, who also famously rowed across the Atlantic with TV presenter Ben Fogle in aid of Children in Need, attended the College’s FE Prizegiving Ceremony to hand out Diplomas and awards to those learners who had won prizes.

College principal Jeanette Dawson was delighted James was able to make an appearance at the event, during which more than 600 students accepted their certificates.

She said: “This event is always a highlight in the College calendar, as is the graduation ceremony that precedes it.

“It marks the culmination of much hard work, dedication and commitment for each and every learner and to have someone like James Cracknell celebrating with us made it very special.”

As well as being charged with handing out Diplomas and awards, James also spoke to the students about his experiences as an Olympic rower and his various exploits since hanging up his oars.

He also offered the learners a few words of wisdom, which he felt would help encourage them to continue to achieve.

“It’s inspiring to see so many young people achieve,” he said. “If anything has helped me achieve it’s always grasping the opportunity, even though sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

“Rowing across the Atlantic showed me that the mind and body are capable of great things and my career has taught me that you are always more capable than you think you are, so you should always go for it.”

Since retiring from international rowing after the 2004 Athens Olympics, James has had a successful media and speaking career, as well as completing the 3,000-mile Atlantic rowing challenge.

More recently Cracknell and Fogle have taken part in a race to the South Pole in the The Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race.

The 450-mile voyage, which can be seen on BBC2 from June 28th, saw James, Ben and Ed Coats, James’s former teammate, in the first organised Antarctic race since Scott and Amundsen’s fateful competition nearly 100 years ago.

A groundbreaking partnership between Bishop Burton College and Hull Rugby Union Football Club has been forged to offer players the chance to access a unique scholarship scheme set up to keep sporting talent in the area.

Hull Rugby Union who have strong ambition, are based at The Hull Sports Centre on Chanterlands Avenue and are coached by former Hull FC and Saracens star Tevita Vaikona.

The club have recently gained promotion into National Division Two (North) after a resounding 40-15 win over Chester in the North/Midlands divisional play-off on the 25th April.

Over recent years the Club has made great strides forward and has been carrying out a tremendous amount of work in the local community through its development programme, which has been recently recognised by the game’s governing body (the RFU) as the best in the country.

Hull RUFC’s development team have worked closely with the College for the last season, coaching the rugby teams and taking advantage of Bishop Burton’s sports facilities.

Director of Sport at the College, Nick Gandy, is delighted that the partnership is now formalised and the scholarships are in place.

“The idea behind the scholarships is that talented players can access first-class coaching and sports development, while taking advantage of the College’s expanding portfolio of Higher Education sports courses, said Nick.

“Applicants must demonstrate outstanding sporting ability and show evidence of achievement or potential at regional or national level, but the overarching aim is to provide athletes with the best possible environment to achieve their academic and sporting goals.”

All applicants accepted on to the scholarship scheme will be expected to play for the College team and also for one of the Club’s teams as part of their overall development.

This is the first time that such scholarships have been made available in the area.

The presence of Hull City manager Phil Brown helped Bishop Burton College’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner go with a swing recently.

The Tigers boss was invited to the event to hand out the prizes and speak to the students about his career in sport and those who organised the dinner were delighted when he accepted.

Assistant principal (campus and learner facilities) Ann Paling oversees sports provision at the College and knew that Mr Brown would be greeted with enthusiasm by the learners.

She said: “Bishop Burton College has a very strong sporting tradition and our teams are very successful so the dinner is held in recognition of the teams and those sportsmen and women at the College who show commitment and dedication to those teams.

“When we heard that Phil Brown had accepted our invitation it was very exciting – he’s a fantastic ambassador for sport in the region and an inspirational figure for the students.

“They were all looking forward to the event and he made it very special for them.”

As well as handing out the awards Mr Brown spoke to guests about his career and life at Hull City – he said that he had enjoyed the evening tremendously and attending such an event reminded him of why he chose to work in sport.

He commented that the students present showed a great deal of enthusiasm, dedication and enjoyment and that often the fun element of sport can be forgotten, but that the Bishop Burton students certainly seemed to thoroughly enjoy their sport.

Mr Brown spent the evening talking to learners and staff and signing autographs.

New appointment will ensure sports success continues at Bishop Burton

The appointment of a new Director of Sport at Bishop Burton will ensure that the College’s sports provision will grow dramatically over the coming months and years.

Nick Gandy has taken up the brand new post and will oversee the construction and development of the College’s sports academy building, a £2.9million structure that will house a new fitness suite, dance studio, multi-purpose sports hall with spectator seating and changing facilities – all of which will be available for use by the public.

Nick hails from Newcastle Upon Tyne, but has relocated to the East Riding to work at the College. He is clear about what attracted him to the role.

He said: “I’d heard really good things about the College and knew it was an ambitious place. The fact that this was a new role and would give me the chance to build something in my own vision was a great opportunity.

“I can make sure that the new build has all of the right equipment, that it’s marketed correctly and that the students get the benefit of some fantastic resources and I will also be instrumental in setting up a number of sports academies.”

Nick comes to the College from Blaydon Rugby Football Club, where he was Director of Rugby. Prior to that he worked in sports development at Northumbria University.

“I’ve always been interested in sport,” he said. “Right from the age of three at prep school when I first got involved, until now where my main passions are rugby and cricket, as well as football and golf.

“I’m really looking forward to making an impression at a College that is keen to develop its sports provision. The teams at Bishop Burton have enjoyed a lot of success in recent years and I’m hoping to improve the environments in which they are competing.”

Nick comes to the College at a very auspicious time – the College’s £25million campus development programme is about to enter its third year and the sports academy building will open its doors in the summer.
