Bishop Burton College named as regional centre for Modern Pentathlon

Bishop Burton College has been named as a Regional Training Centre for Modern Pentathlon and the two organisations – Bishop Burton College and Pentathlon GB, have announced that the College will host a Modern Pentathlon Training Camp at the beginning of August.

The Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon was first introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm in 1912 and comprises the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running.

Peter Hart, the chief executive of Pentathlon GB paid a visit to the College to discuss the plans for creating a regional training centre for modern pentathlon including a training camp this summer.

Mr Hart said: “The College is a fantastic venue for pentathlon training with world-class facilities and we are delighted to work in partnership with Bishop Burton College, the students and community of Yorkshire in focussing our activities at the College.

“We are delighted to use the support we are receiving from Sport England to help us achieve this.”

Ann Marshall the regional development officer for Yorkshire continued: “By organising regular regional training at Bishop Burton College we can bring in world-class coaches for weekend or mid-week sessions and the athletes can train together as pentathletes rather than single-discipline athletes, which will benefit them enormously.

“The training camp which is planned for the summer will give regular athletes a concentrated opportunity to train in all five sports and will also be open to athletes from other parts of the country.”

Bishop Burton College’s director of sport Nick Gandy said “We have been working together for some time already and it was clear that a partnership would be of great mutual benefit and we are looking forward to working closely with Pentathlon GB and contributing towards Modern Pentathlon’s continued success at future Olympic Games.

“By establishing these links the athletes will benefit from the College’s fantastic resources and the learners will benefit by seeing the hard work and dedication of these sportsmen and women and perhaps by trying the sport themselves.”

Football-Reaseheath have no answer to dominant Bishop Burton display

Bishop Burton entertained Reasheath in a Northern Counties match in a reverse of the fixture the previous month. With a few absentees, Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Chris Young, Olly Burns and Nick Robinson were called up from the HE team. Bishop Burton started brightly with the front two of Olly Burns and James Webb causing problems at every opportunity possible. It was Webb who opened the scoring after a great through ball by Tom Chippendale. Bishop Burton dominated the opening stages and the back four of Luke Duerden, Ben Asquith, Nathan Bell and Louis Cooper were hardly tested. Dominance started to pay with 3 more goals in the next 20 minutes with strikes from Chippendale, Burns and Webb. Bishop were playing some really good football, a lot of it one and two touches, and the mixture of FE and HE players was really paying dividends. Reaseheath launched their first meaningful attack after half an hour but a good save from Alex Gill kept the score at 4-0. Reaseheath where beginning to argue amongst themselves and Bishop Burton took full advantage of this with 2 more goals in the next five minutes. The first was from the penalty spot, after some good work from Brad Delves down the left was halted by a foul from the Reaseheath full back. James Webb took the resulting penalty to complete his hat trick. The sixth goal was scored by substitute Nick Robinson with his first touch of the ball. He finished a flowing move down the right between Nathan Bell and Jamie Williamson.

The half-time whistle went with Bishop Burton winning 6-0, a score which they truly deserved after a great attacking performance. Although 6-0 up, Manager Mark Frampton challenged his team to play using only one and two touches each and attempting to keep the ball below head height. This allowed the game to stay at a high tempo and stopped players just running with the ball. A few subs were made to freshen up the game and they all put in great performances, especially right back Shaun Robson. The scoring continued with goals from Tom Chippendale, Jamie Williamson, James Webb and two from Olly Burns which made the score 11-0. Reaseheath created their best chance of the game when a mistake from defender Luke Duerden allowed the Reasheath striker to go through one on one with Alex Gill but Gill produced a great save to keep a clean sheet. The remaining 20 minutes produced another 3 goals, the pick of the bunch being from Nathan Bell, who hit a shot on the turn from 20 yards into the bottom corner, his first goal for the college. The final whistle blew with the score at 14-0, a bit of a one-sided game but a confidence boost for the lads. All credit must go to Reaseheath though who never gave in and fought right to the end; their attitude was a credit to their College.

New College Basketball team too strong for East Riding

Bishop Burton College 30 East Riding College 17

For the second game of the season, Bishop Burton played East Riding College at home and came away with a deserved victory by 30-17.

The match started off slowly, with both teams unable to convert their chances. The home team were slightly nervous, which showed when it came to defending, as they were unsure as to who to mark and were slightly fortuitous that the away team did not capitalise on this. However after this nervy opening, Bishop Burton settled and scored the first basket of the match.

During the first quarter both teams missed a number of opportunities which could have easily been converted. Halfway through the second quarter though Bishop Burton got out of first gear and started scoring with more regularity, and were leading at the end of the first half by 12 – 8.

The third quarter followed the same pattern as the first, with neither team scoring many points but Bishop Burton were playing very good defence, with blocks coming from the big guys Phil Buckley and Brad Campbell.

Going into the fourth quarter, it was still a low scoring game at 17 – 12 to Bishop Burton. This final quarter was where Bishop Burton took over the game and started to dominate. They basis for this was the strong defence which restricted East Riding to 5 points for the whole quarter. On the opposite end of the court, Bishop were converting every chance that they got, with some good passing from Nader Koder and Glen Breary.

The match overall was a very low scoring game but ended with Bishop Burton beating East Riding 30 – 17. Bishop Burton were overall the better side and deserved to win the match, in what was only their second ever competitive fixture.

Region’s first rugby academy proving successful at Bishop Burton College

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 24th November 2009

Bishop Burton College’s rugby academy – the first of its kind in the region – has begun, allowing young sporting talent from across Yorkshire and the Humber to flourish.

The academy, which was the brainchild of College principal Jeanette Dawson and director of sport Nick Gandy, will enable talented young rugby union players to play and train at a high level, while studying for a degree.

Nick Gandy believes the academy addresses a need in the region to retain those young players with the potential to succeed.

He said: “The idea behind the academy is to give gifted young rugby players from the area the chance to grow and develop their game, while progressing academically.

“Traditionally young people with sporting talent have had to leave the area to train and study elsewhere and we feel Bishop Burton College is ideally placed to address this need and stem this flow of talent out of the East Riding.

“With the opening of the College’s new Centre for Sport & Fitness the scholars have access to some of the region’s best sporting and fitness facilities and they are able to study one of our fantastic Higher Education sports courses.

“There are already plans to offer academies in other sporting disciplines such as football and equine because we know Bishop Burton College offers the whole package for any talented young sportsman or woman who wants to achieve.”

The College worked closely with Hull Rugby Union Football Club (RUFC) to perfect the formula for the Academy and the Club will also provide coaching and sports development advice to the Academy scholars.

The club’s Director of Rugby, former Tongan international Tevita Vaikona and head coach and Hull FC captain Lee Radford work closely with all of the scholars during regular training sessions to make sure they consistently meet the high standards set by the College and the club.

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 19th November 2009

Bishop Burton has become the first college in the East Riding to be officially recognised as an Olympic education partner after having an application approved by the London 2012 Get Set Network.

The College is already an approved equestrian training base for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Get Set is the official London 2012 education programme for schools, colleges and local authority education providers across the UK and aims to involve children and young people in the excitement and inspiration of the Games.

The network is designed to create a ‘Legacy’ that will build during the run up to London 2012 and will continue once the games are over by embedding the seven Olympic values into the curriculum and the mindsets of children and young people across the UK.

The Olympic values are as follows:

• Friendship • Courage • Determination • Excellence • Equality • Respect • Inspiration

Centre for Sport & Fitness welcomes visit from Olympic gold-medallist

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 8th October 2009

The brand new Centre for Sport and Fitness at Bishop Burton College welcomed a very special guest in the shape of Olympic gold-medallist Tim Brabants.

Tim, who famously paddled to victory in the 1000-metre sprint kayak event at the Bejing games, called in at the College during its recent open day to have a look round and chat with staff.

The new centre opened on the 1st September and is open to College learners, staff and the general public.

The building features a state-of-the-art fitness suite, dance studio, sports hall, modern changing facilities and a shop.

Bishop Burton College’s Director of Sport Nick Gandy was delighted to welcome Tim to the College.

He said: “We are very proud of the new sporting facilities here at Bishop Burton College and to get a visit from a sporting hero like Tim Brabants is fantastic.

“The visit certainly caused a stir amongst the students and staff on campus and Tim was happy to pose for photographs and talk to learners as he enjoyed a tour of the College.

“He’s an extremely talented sportsman and was extremely enthusiastic about the sporting facilities here at Bishop Burton. He has promised to come and visit us again and we’re already looking forward to it.”

Tim, who is based in Nottingham, is also a practising doctor and works in accident and emergency in the city.

He was full of praise for the College’s new Centre for Sports and Fitness.

“The college is brilliant,” said Tim. “Absolutely top-class. The sporting facilities are obviously where my interests lie and the centre seems conducive to a nice environment to train.

“If I lived nearby I would definitely train here.”

Olympic gold-medalist helps celebrate success of champion learners

Two-times Olympic gold medalist James Cracknell OBE dropped into East Yorkshire recently to help Further Education students from Bishop Burton College celebrate the end of term and the successful completion of their courses.

James, who also famously rowed across the Atlantic with TV presenter Ben Fogle in aid of Children in Need, attended the College’s FE Prizegiving Ceremony to hand out Diplomas and awards to those learners who had won prizes.

College principal Jeanette Dawson was delighted James was able to make an appearance at the event, during which more than 600 students accepted their certificates.

She said: “This event is always a highlight in the College calendar, as is the graduation ceremony that precedes it.

“It marks the culmination of much hard work, dedication and commitment for each and every learner and to have someone like James Cracknell celebrating with us made it very special.”

As well as being charged with handing out Diplomas and awards, James also spoke to the students about his experiences as an Olympic rower and his various exploits since hanging up his oars.

He also offered the learners a few words of wisdom, which he felt would help encourage them to continue to achieve.

“It’s inspiring to see so many young people achieve,” he said. “If anything has helped me achieve it’s always grasping the opportunity, even though sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

“Rowing across the Atlantic showed me that the mind and body are capable of great things and my career has taught me that you are always more capable than you think you are, so you should always go for it.”

Since retiring from international rowing after the 2004 Athens Olympics, James has had a successful media and speaking career, as well as completing the 3,000-mile Atlantic rowing challenge.

More recently Cracknell and Fogle have taken part in a race to the South Pole in the The Amundsen Omega 3 South Pole Race.

The 450-mile voyage, which can be seen on BBC2 from June 28th, saw James, Ben and Ed Coats, James’s former teammate, in the first organised Antarctic race since Scott and Amundsen’s fateful competition nearly 100 years ago.

Tigers manager helps Bishop Burton College sports teams celebrate success

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 8th April 2009

The presence of Hull City manager Phil Brown helped Bishop Burton College’s Annual Sports Awards Dinner go with a swing recently.

The Tigers boss was invited to the event to hand out the prizes and speak to the students about his career in sport and those who organised the dinner were delighted when he accepted.

Assistant principal (campus and learner facilities) Ann Paling oversees sports provision at the College and knew that Mr Brown would be greeted with enthusiasm by the learners.

She said: “Bishop Burton College has a very strong sporting tradition and our teams are very successful so the dinner is held in recognition of the teams and those sportsmen and women at the College who show commitment and dedication to those teams.

“When we heard that Phil Brown had accepted our invitation it was very exciting – he’s a fantastic ambassador for sport in the region and an inspirational figure for the students.

“They were all looking forward to the event and he made it very special for them.”

As well as handing out the awards Mr Brown spoke to guests about his career and life at Hull City – he said that he had enjoyed the evening tremendously and attending such an event reminded him of why he chose to work in sport.

He commented that the students present showed a great deal of enthusiasm, dedication and enjoyment and that often the fun element of sport can be forgotten, but that the Bishop Burton students certainly seemed to thoroughly enjoy their sport.

Mr Brown spent the evening talking to learners and staff and signing autographs.

New appointment will ensure sports success continues at Bishop Burton

Posted by Bishop Burton College Press Office 27th March 2009

The appointment of a new Director of Sport at Bishop Burton will ensure that the College’s sports provision will grow dramatically over the coming months and years.

Nick Gandy has taken up the brand new post and will oversee the construction and development of the College’s sports academy building, a £2.9million structure that will house a new fitness suite, dance studio, multi-purpose sports hall with spectator seating and changing facilities – all of which will be available for use by the public.

Nick hails from Newcastle Upon Tyne, but has relocated to the East Riding to work at the College. He is clear about what attracted him to the role.

He said: “I’d heard really good things about the College and knew it was an ambitious place. The fact that this was a new role and would give me the chance to build something in my own vision was a great opportunity.

“I can make sure that the new build has all of the right equipment, that it’s marketed correctly and that the students get the benefit of some fantastic resources and I will also be instrumental in setting up a number of sports academies.”

Nick comes to the College from Blaydon Rugby Football Club, where he was Director of Rugby. Prior to that he worked in sports development at Northumbria University.

“I’ve always been interested in sport,” he said. “Right from the age of three at prep school when I first got involved, until now where my main passions are rugby and cricket, as well as football and golf.

“I’m really looking forward to making an impression at a College that is keen to develop its sports provision. The teams at Bishop Burton have enjoyed a lot of success in recent years and I’m hoping to improve the environments in which they are competing.”

Nick comes to the College at a very auspicious time – the College’s £25million campus development programme is about to enter its third year and the sports academy building will open its doors in the summer.
